Die Expertinnen stellen klar: “We believe that conditions do not presently exist anywhere in Syria for safe returns“.

#leavenoonebehind

Turkey: State paramilitaries are destroying Syrian refugees’ tent homes in İzmir https://www.oplatz.net/turkey-state-paramilitaries-are-destroying-syrian-refugees-tent-homes-in-izmir/ https://www.oplatz.net/turkey-state-paramilitaries-are-destroying-syrian-refugees-tent-homes-in-izmir/#respond Mon, 13 Feb 2017 11:57:16 +0000 https://www.oplatz.net/?p=12513

As of February 8th, refugees living in tents in the Torbalı and Bayındır districts of İzmir are being evacuated in accordance with district governorate decisions through the intervention of its gendarmerie State paramilitary force. The tent areas are being removed. Thousands of refugees, who left their countries because of the civil war in Syria, have been struggling to survive as seasonal agricultural workers and living in the tent camps, constructed through their own efforts, in rural areas of İzmir.

Since Wednesday, many tent areas have been removed by gendarmerie without reason. Some tent areas were given until Monday to evacuate. Refugees whose assigned residence city is not İzmir have been expelled and people are being told they are expected to rent homes. However, for the majority of the refugees who work for very low wages it is not possible to earn enough money to move into a house.

In return for originally directing people to the tent areas and finding people jobs, “dayıbaşı” (the bosses of the areas) deduct money from refugees’ wages, pay irregularly or do not pay people at all. Since the agricultural workers need to live close to their working areas and don’t know the local language [Turkish], they are forced to accept the dayıbaşı system. Thus, being evacuated from their tents means taking away their means to an income.

What this means is that refugees who already left everything they had in Syria will, for a long time, now be unable to earn an income — demand for seasonal workers decreases in winter. They have survived through the cold weather thanks to tents, food, firing, diapers and hygiene products provided by a limited number of volunteers and CSO’s. The tent areas, which lack toilets, showers, clean water and  have been covered in mud from rainfall, are being ignored by the authorities.

These conditions affect children the most. Children are exposed to illnesses and developmental disabilities as a result of poor nutrition and health conditions. Hospitals deny treatment to refugees without documents. Even the death of baby Noaf, of pneumonia, after being refused hospital treatment did not impact government policy; which makes it particularly hard for refugees to get registered. And there are lots of children suffering from pneumonia in the camps. The threat of forced displacement by the gendarmerie further deepens the trauma of children, initially caused by the civil war and subsequent poor living conditions.

Last May, before the harvest, these tent areas providing a living space for nearly 2,000 people were removed by the district governorate. It is thought-provoking that the same action is now being taken just before seed-time, when the demand for seasonal workers increases. All this despite three years of speculation that the district governorate and municipality had plans to move people from the tent areas to one central place; to improve the living conditions of agricultural worker refugees.

Syrian Gay Refugee Killed in İstanbul https://www.oplatz.net/syrian-gay-refugee-killed-in-istanbul/ https://www.oplatz.net/syrian-gay-refugee-killed-in-istanbul/#respond Tue, 09 Aug 2016 05:58:31 +0000 https://www.oplatz.net/?p=11028 Syrian gay refugee Muhammed Wisam Sankari has been found dead in Yenikapı district of İstanbul. Perpetrators of Sankari who was beheaded are yet to be caught. Sankari who was threatened, kidnapped by a crowded group of men and raped earlier was trying to flee to another country for his life safety.

In the wake of the homicide, Sankari’s housemates Rayan, Diya and Görkem have told Yıldız Tar from KaosGL.org of the difficulties Sankari had to endure, problems of LGBTİ refugees and immigrants in Turkey and their “Who is next” concerns.

“We have complained to Security, they did nothing”

Rayan who knew Sankari for over a year said, “He was very unsafe lately. He wasn’t telling much when we asked what is going on” and told that Sankari was threatened and kidnapped.

Rayan noted that they are having difficulties even walking home in Aksaray where they lives, a couple of times crowded group of men with knives threatened and tried to rape them. According to Rayan, what Sankari went through is as follows:

“We were staying at another house before this place but we had to leave it because we are gay. The neighboring people kept staring at us but we did nothing wrong. Five months ago, a group kidnapped Wisam in Fatih. They took him to a forestry by car, beat and raped him. They would kill him but Sankari managed to throw himself on the road and survived. We filed a complaint to the Security but nothing has come out of it”.

“We could recognize our friend from his trousers”

Görkem is a friend of Sankari and others and explained disappearance of Sankari and how they received his death knell in tears:

“Wisam left the house on July 30 Saturday. We were nervous because of the threats we were receiving. We told him to not go but he said he will go out to the street for about 15-20 minutes. He didn’t come home the whole night. We panicked when Wisam didn’t come the next day.

“Police called us on Sunday night. We went to Yenikapı with Rayan. They cut Wisam violently. It was so violent that two knives were broken inside him. They beheaded him, his upper body was in unrecognizable shape, his internal organs had come out. We recognized him from his trousers”.

“Who is next?”

Diya expressed that after Sankari’s killinn, they live in fear of “Who is next”:

“I am very scared. I feel as everyone is looking at me on the street. I was kidnapped too twice. No one takes care of us. Everybody just speaks. I receive threats on phone. I speak calmly so nothing bad will happen to me. It doesn’t matter whether Syrian or Turkish, if you are gay you are being targeted by everyone. They demand sex from you and stalk you if you don’t want it. I don’t even have an ID, who shall protect me for what? Who is next?” (YY/ÇT/TK)

International Women Space got to know Viviana when she was still living the emergency shelter (Lager) at the Wiesenstraße, in Wedding, Berlin. On te 29th of January we went to the Notunterkunft to have a coffee with Viviana and see how she was. The moment we met, Viviana was already showing signs of stress. No wonder, she was one of the few women living in a shared space of a former Basketball Hall with 200 men having only her bed as a place of her own.

As we tried to get the house to see the conditions in which she was living, the security stopped us on the corridor. First they said that we had to show our documents before coming in. Fair enough. We know the procedures and are used to show our ID’s when entering such houses, but as soon as we were pushed back by the security to the entrance hall, they changed their minds and we could no longer enter the premisses at all. As some discussion continued, came the news that Viviana, by the way, could no longer live in the house and must go to Lageso, at that very same night, and try to find a new place to live.

We argued with the House’s administration that a woman should never be thrown out on the streets at night. We reminded them about the current discussions about the safety of women in Germany, as this has been a big topic in the country since the reported sexualized violence in Köln during new year’s eve. They didn’t seem to care or even relate the events in Köln with the fact that they were expelling a woman from her shelter on a friday night. We argued long, trying to make they understand that if this was their decision, they should at least wait until the morning after, when it would be safer for Viviana to leave the house and search for a new place, but they were resolute and Viviana was expelled. Luckily we were there and could accompany Viviana to the Lageso and together find a new place for her in a Heim, a former school building, where many other refugees are already living.

Here is a short video documentation of her expulsion from the Emergency shelter at the Wiesenstraße.

Syrian Refugees Slovenia
Refugee protest in Slovenia

19. September, 2015

At the border at Rigonce (Slovenia/Croatia) there where first bigger waves of refugees. At 17.30 and there were around 100, but 3 hours later, there were at least 500-600 at that small border. At the Bregana border crossing there were already 800 people and up to today there are around 2000-3000.  They are already transported to Slovenian asylum centers, camps etc.

Slovenian side of the border was packed with 100-150 robocops and they didn’t let anyone through. Slovenian government gave a clear massage that it closed it’s borders, even before people came. They also used teargas once and their batons.  Currently they are letting inside families, mostly women and children, and are separating men from them. People are tired, but extremly filled with positive energy, they showed that struggle for freedom is unstoppable.

Activists are really organized, but situation changes from hour to hour.

Croatia ‘forcing’ Hungary to take in refugees

From No Border Serbia Blog

19 September, 2015

The situation is changing rapidly, it s very chaotic and hard to follow what is going on. After the brutal police attack at Horgos almost all people left to Croatia. approx. only 100 people stayed there waiting for a chance to cross. There are 21 persons  in prison in Hungary they were arrested at Horgoš when they broke through the gate.

We dont know exactly the accusations but probably they ‘ll try to criminalize them on the worst way.  If anybody can do something, they need international support!

Since Croatia  also closed it’s borders with Serbia yesterday, people  are entering  to croatia in all sides through fields.
Right now there are 5000 people in Tovarnik.

Most of the people (coming from Macedonia and Belgrade) are going to Šid now, we heard that many people are around  Bezdan too (west -north serbia). So these are the  the new hotspots on the serbo croatian border. During the last night many people entered Hungary from Croatia. Migrants who entered HUngary were transferred to Szentgotthard open camp on the border with Austria, and some of them are already in Austria.

It seems like the authorities try just to  registered people, and  not really taking their fingerprints. There was a strong resistance to break the border on Bregana  ( on the
highway border crossing place from Croatia to Slovenia ) and Harmica (the  train track goes there) and probably on other places too. The police was using teargas and dogs to stop people. Today they started to let families and vulnerable groups inside Slovenia. It goes very slowly.

For many people it s the third border they should break in so they are exhausted, tired, many people are sick and injured, there is no water, it s very hot but the nights are cold, no medical aid, nothing.

International solidarity is needed ASAP!
please share these infos our capacity is very weak we have some activists on the terrain but they
have no internet no laptops even charging phones in the middle of nowhere is difficult…we will try to publish more details soon.

refugee protest
Refugee protest on Hungarian Serbian border

After the brutal police attack on the Hungarian border (more details soon),  most of the migrants yesterday from Horgoš (SRB-HUN border) continued towards Croatia (mostly Šid and Bezdan border crossing points). All kind of support is needed now on the borders! People are exhausted, they were struggling for their right to move, resisting repression days and nights without a rest. Now they have to face the same difficulties on the croatian border as well. Croatia closed today 7 border crossing places ( Tovarnik, Ilok, Ilok 2, Principovac, Principovac 2, Batina and  Erdut). People try to enter in smaller groups bypassing the blockades. We call all people in the border zones to show solidarity and support people.

Till today morning around 14 000 people entered Croatia. The authorities  transport people to refugee camps, but people want to continue and move on! Some groups already arrived to the slovenian border, they face repression from the slovenian border police.

Spread the idea  of DIRECT SOLIDARITY with the people who are traveling/struggling. Slovenia is trying to close it ‘s borders. Right now it seems to be closed but mass protests on the borders can create pressure! We should not forget that the people  on the move now are very powerful, many of them survived the  repression/violence in fascist Hungary and today in Tovarnik where for some time police held people in a guarded are to hold them back (they were waiting for 14 hours to continue) and the crowd of children, men and women was just destroyed part of the fence or jumped the police chains after a while as a mass protest.

Updates from Slovenia

Latest info from activists who are on the cro- slo border  ( 18.09.  1 AM):

“They stopped international train to Munich and send back to croatia around 100 people,  and others are send further in slovenia but we dont know where. all train traffic is stopped until morning.”

“Train from zagreb to austria with approx 150 migrants is held in train station Dobova from 19:00.A lot of police (riot police and dogs)is here,we are not allowed to talk with migrants. situation is calm, we are all waiting.”
“Please tell everybody, especially to refugees to stick together, to go the border in big big numbers, let us organize a camp on the border, bigger one. Let ua make pressure to open the borders! Small groups are taken by police and deported or detained in closed detention center!

150 people that managed to enter Slovenia were brought to the detention  center in Postojna. The international trains serbia- croatia-slovenia are stopped. The slovenian police is present in Dubove with many special police forces and dogs. In the village „Harmica“ at the croatian side of the border small groups of migrants are arriving. Now there around 200 but it is hard to guess, because they are not all in one place. People started to go towords and along the river (Sutla river)  that marks the border of cro/slov there, up north. Croatian police there is only  a few and very calm. Slovenian side seems to be more of  a problem for the people.

“There will be a protest today at 18h on the Cro-Slo border (Rigonce crossing place), where people were stopped by force. Let’s make pressure  from both sides of the border! “
