The inhabitants of the overcrowded camp have not received any answer so far, while everyone on the spot, including the support initiatives have by far reached their limits for months. In these circumstances, today, the first COVID-19 infection has been discovered in the camp.

  • To the Governments of European Countries
  • The European Public

Moria Camp, Lesvos April 16th 2020

We are addressing you from Moria Camp in Lesvos and ask for your help and support. Here in Lesvos almost 24.000 refugees currently live in highly inhuman conditions, with no services, only several hours of water per day and under deplorable hygienic conditions. We see, that now, after a long time, there is an ongoing discussion in the European public about us, about the circumstances we are living in. We would like to thank for all the solidarity, which we got in the last months and days from the European civil society, from all the people, who are not willing to abandon us in these times of the corona-crisis in their countries. We like to thank to all the politicians, communities, towns all over Europe, who declared, they like to receive refugees like us in their neighbourhoods. This give us hope and confidence, that the long and hard way we all have behind us, when we were forced to leave our home countries, was not in vain. We all came to Europe, because we want to live like human beings and because we could not stand the violence, the wars and the persecution we all faced. We were
coming, because our children deserve a better future, where they can live in safety, have access to health services, go to school and have the opportunity to make the most of their lives by using their abilities.

Now we are in a double crisis. We are hostages of circumstances, we are not
responsible for. At first the general living conditions in the Moria camp, which are really horrible and which are degrading us day by day. But now we face the problem of the pandemic danger, which we cannot stand alone. We began to organize our life in misery, we try to protect our dignity, but we cannot fight against a virus without minimal hygienic standards and possibilities to protect us. Any advise how to avoid the spread of Corona even sound illusionary to us:

How should we keep distance, if thousand have to wait for food every day, how to wash our hands, if no water is available? How can sick persons isolate if there is no place for that?

In the beginning of the crisis, we felt left abandoned and were totally unprepared. We took some measures to self-organize with the support from some, mainly local Greek NGOs to raise awareness and prepare for the worse. During the last weeks, we managed a lot of small steps, cleaned the camp, set up some hand washing stations, printed posters and leaflets and did other activities. While Corona spread in Greece and here in Lesvos, we expected the worst, because this virus in the camp would be like a death sentence for old, sick and other vulnerable individuals.

For the first time, we are able to breath in a bit of relief, since no new cases were reported on the island for more than two weeks. But this does not mean the danger vanishes. In contrary, Moria camp will stay vulnerable for many more months. But for us, the first phase of trying to keep the virus away by all means is over and now we are trying to prepare for the next period of time. In March here in Moria, refugees created several groups like the Moria Corona Awareness Team (MCAT) and Moria White Helmets. We worked very closely together with Greek and International NGOs as well as the local authorities. We also followed the demands and campaigns of the local Greek government for evacuation and call by ourselves to dissolve these camps in Lesvos, Chios, Samos and other islands as soon as possible. But we do see that this will not happen soon. Therefore, we suggest a two-folded strategy for the future. We urge Europe to evacuate the old, sick and vulnerable immediately because there is no protection for them here. This has to include unaccompanied or sick children with their families. In the meanwhile, many important steps can be taken to help the ones who will remain. The steps to address these issues are:

  • water (sewage/toilets, showers, and taps)
  • trash
  • isolation
  • food supply/food line
  • hygiene/disinfection
  • fire protection
  • security
  • awareness/education

This can and should be done with support of the European Union and EU governments, with the understanding that this is not a long-term solution. These camps violate the laws of international human rights and refugee rights. There should be a consensus among the European governments that these camps need to be dissolved as soon as possible, which realistically means after this Coronavirus pandemic. We, the refugees of Moria camp, under the guidance of MCAT and Moria White Helmets offer our support
and cooperation to any entity ready to assist in this endeavor on a temporary and provisionary level. This strategy also coincides with the desires of the Greek government who have long been requesting the EU’s assistance in taking in refugees, finding a long-term solution and relieving the pressure on the island and its people.

We know how much the Greek citizens on these islands have suffered during the last years and we also call on Europe to assist them in these difficult times. They also ask since a long for a sustainable solution instead of being left alone with this crisis. As we see it, the most plausible solution would be that the governments of the EU make cooperative contracts with the Greek government to provide aid, backing and technical support in order to fix what is fixable while the Coronavirus crisis is ongoing. At the
same time, it is also important to work towards evacuating as many people as possible. This being of the minors, the elderly and those with health conditions, and then working towards a long-term solution for evacuating the island and closing the camps once the crisis has passed. We welcome very much the first steps taken by the Greek Government now to get some of these vulnerable people out of the camps. By addressing the immediate structural needs in Moria camp on a short-term, temporary basis, time will be bought to find a more substantial solution for those currently residing
in Moria, paving the way for Moria and other hot spots to be permanently closed.

We need help to help ourselves. We are willing to do whatever we can do to protect all of us from the ongoing danger of the Coronavirus. We are in Europe and we need Europe to survive!

follow on facebook

follow on facebook

(Wer A sagt muss nicht Z sagen.

Anti Frontex Days 21-23 May 2016 https://www.oplatz.net/anti-frontex-days-21-23-may-2016/ https://www.oplatz.net/anti-frontex-days-21-23-may-2016/#respond Fri, 13 May 2016 23:02:14 +0000 https://www.oplatz.net/?p=10657 This year more than ever, we need your support to say NO to the European Union’s migration policies and criminal activities of its border control agency, Frontex.

img_4816Closing borders and cutting the wealthy Europe off from the countries of South and East – plundered and kept in poverty – aims at preserving inequalities on both sides. Borders do not only work outwards. Their tightening causes increasing limitation of people’s rights and freedom also here, in Europe. Shifting the “problem” of migration onto countries such as Turkey, ignoring the death of thousands in the Mediterranean, imprisonment of those seeking help and better life in Europe, are directly linked to preserving capitalism as a system, in its most bloodthirsty variant.

Work conditions for those who are illegally employed in Europe on a mass scale are often not unlike slavery. Only a tiny percent of those appealing for asylum get the papers which enable them to escape the lot of illegal worker. Keeping migrants in a precarious position serves only economic exploitation, and makes it possible to quickly get rid of them whenever they claim any of their rights. It simultaneously allows for keeping wages low for local workers who can always be replaced by illegal underpaid workforce. The anti-migrant hysteria throughout Europe accounts for a cynical political game whose aim is to keep the power and privilege for a handful of the most well-off.

For a few years now in Warsaw, on the anniversary of the agency’s emergence which coincides with that of the racist murder on Max Itoya, AntiFrontex Days are organized by an alliance of groups and activists in solidarity with migrants. This year, we are not limiting
actions to Poland’s capital where the Frontex headquarters are located. We want to invite various groups and people in different locations to express their solidarity with migrants and workers. Let us say this together: we do not consent to policies of exploi tation and exclusion which those in power try to force upon us.

May 21th to 23th are to be days of objection towards Frontex and EU’s policies towards refugees. We encourage you to initiate actions of solidarity in your locations, so that we’re all able to broadcast our lack of consent to the power discourse that dominates. Let art
activism, happenings, meetings, demonstrations and direct actions: all activities which you see as relevant in your local context, be a firm and bold outcry against EU’s policies. Choose for yourselves the form of action you find most suitable.

Please send us info documenting the events, your appeals, articles or other elements of what you do, so that we can all share them via our sister site and inspire one another to take action.

NO to Border Regime and Policies of Exploitation!

Stop deportations – There is enough space for everyone!

Stop deportations – There is enough space for everyone!

Call to demonstration against deportations to Turkey and for the acceptance of refugees – at Alexanderplatz on Friday the 15th April 2016 at 4pm

Since Monday there have been deportations of refugees from Greece to Turkey. To Turkey, where democratic rights and freedoms are currently under attack and a war is being waged against the Kurds. To Turkey, where Amnesty International reports that people are being deported back to Syria. To the middle of a warzone.

At the same time, tens of thousands of refugees are stuck at the Greek-Macedonian border in Idomeni and in the internment camps on the Greek islands. Almost half the people there are children, whose mental and physical health may be damaged for life as a result of living in these conditions. Many of these people have close family in other European countries. However, laws allowing family reunion are not working – in Turkey the average waiting period for an appointment to discuss the possibility of family reunion is 14 months. In Idomeni it’s only possible to book appointments using Skype. The number is constantly occupied.

We wonder where the human rights so frequently evoked remain in all these deals and new bits of legislation. There doesn‘t seem to us to be an awareness that these are people like us who are being mistreated at the borders. We want to show our solidarity with the demands of the people on Europe’s outer borders: open the borders! Stop deportations to Turkey and other countries!

Come to our demonstration on Friday 15th April. Show your rejection of the deal with Turkey! Let’s make it clear that there is still space for refugees here! Show your solidarity with the people on Europe’s outer borders!

The sealing off of the ‘Balkan borders’ https://www.oplatz.net/the-sealing-of-the-balkan-borders/ https://www.oplatz.net/the-sealing-of-the-balkan-borders/#respond Wed, 02 Dec 2015 00:07:29 +0000 https://www.oplatz.net/?p=8849
Balkan borders
Photo: Gavgelija, Robert Atanasovski, AFP

The EU has finally struck a deal with the Turkish government at 29.10.2015 in which 3 bilion Euros per yer, visa liberalizations and unfrozen EU membership negotiations, negotiations that the EU froze with Turkey in 2005 under pretense of  R. Erdoğans government style as authoritative, will be exchanged for the Turkish role as an external Schengen border ‘guardian’. With this EU again proved that its interests have to be protected at all costs, quickly ignoring previous comments regarding the current Turkish president R. Erdoğan, as well as his increased surpression of Kurdish people, media critics and activists in the recent years. Political Machiavellism labels and continue to label Western politics throughout the history and it doesn’t leave out other political actors around the globe.

Immediately after strucking a deal with the EU, Turkey launched a police action at its coastline near the city Ayvacik, a common location to be smuggled to Greece, arresting all the people, including people from Afganistan, Syria and Irak, who were the only nationalities that are for nearly two weeks allowed to pass to their desired location through the so called ‘Balkan’ border. The process of selection on the basis of nationality goes against the UNHCR conventions regarding the displaced people who flee their homeland to persue safer and better environment for their life. Besides national segregation and filtering the increased maritime operations at the Mediterranean sea, which was even before the so called ‘refugee crisis’ one of the most militarized borders in the world, are endorsed and enacted to prevent people reaching Greece.

Meantime Macedonia already started erupting its own fences at Gavgelija border with Greece (source: http://www.ibtimes.com/european-refugee-crisis-macedonia-builds-fence-along-greek-border-how-will-europe-2202836), and planing to build 50km of fences with the letter. For nearly two weeks people who are not from Syria, Iraq and Afganistan and are prevented to cross the border. A quick reminder, when Austria and Slovenia said they will not let anymore anyone through who is not from the mentioned countries and this time explicitly labeled all other nationalities as ‘economic migrants’, a suspected domino effect followed all to the Greek-Macedonian border which started to do the same. Resistance against the police and the demands for the freedom of movement at the Idomeni border is a constant struggle from the people who are trapped in the no mans land. As activists of Idomeni at 30.11.2015 reported:

‘Situation in ‪#‎Idomeni camp on the border with Macedonia is still very tense, as around 2.500 people are not alowed to pass the border due to their nationality. International volunteers have reported that big aid organizations are focused entirely inside the camp with the “right refugees”. Outside the camp there are only a handful of volunteers dealing with the 2.500 and growing group of people stuck in no man land. Today at least they didn’t have rain, but the weather is very cold and lots of refugees are still sleeping in the open. Our colleagues in Idomeni are asking for more volunteers, but also donations of tents, raincoats, sleeping bags, shoes, warm clothes, blankets (especially thermal blankets), baby clothes and baby food. If you can help, please contact forgotteninidomeni@gmail.com or ask us for a direct contact of the volunteers on the ground.’

Such developments only give more power to the smugglers and push people to search for more dangerous ways to reach their desired destinations.

The so called ‘refugee crisis’ should not be understood as a humanitarian crisis, but a political crisis of the European – whether direct or indirect – dealing with its imperial past and neocolonial present, while not denying other global political actors. It is also a serie of crisis of the global neoliberal acummulation of capital by appropriation of the local resources which builds on colonial legacies. The recent flow of people is nothing new and not only a response to such historical and contemporary developments, but also a continuous autonomus struggle and desire for freedom which destroys or at least forces to reshape the existing borders that serve to accumulate capital in the old and new imperial centers and for its owners, leaving crumbs for the others.

As also the somewhat ambivalent critical discourse of ‘adressing and aiming at the causes for emigration’ penetrated within the present EU’s policies – of course remodified according to its intereses – dealing with the flows of people within its borders, this is something what history told us that we should not simply accept. Only when Europe will put a mirror infront of itself, then it will see the true causes.

Solidarity & peace.

The construction of the European Union’s immigration system https://www.oplatz.net/the-construction-of-the-european-union/ https://www.oplatz.net/the-construction-of-the-european-union/#respond Sun, 25 Oct 2015 23:28:31 +0000 https://www.oplatz.net/?p=8309
Unser Europa hat keine Grenzen
Unser Europa hat keine Grenzen

These days it is getting obvious that the European Union, a supranational entity supposedly built on the values of freedom and peace, is putting a stamp on it’s mostly non-existant immigration and asylum system. That the European leaders selectively apply such values only for the economic and political elites is nothing new. New and surprising aren’t even the new changes for the immigration and asylum laws that are being developed under the privileged position by the technocratic elites in Berlin and Brussels. We must never forget how many people continue to die while trying to cross Mediterranean every year, because of the already existing legal framework.

With the so called ‘refugee crisis’, a term invented and endorsed by the political elites, mainstream media and affected public xenophobic discourses, the first are getting scared that now the European Union’s existance is at stake. The fear is being spreaded through the discourse of security, financial burden and unadaptable cultural differences in order to scare and convince the ‘European citizens’ that securing the border is the only way to protect their life and property. This works at least in two directions, whether pushing some member countries taking more Eurosceptical stance or completely subordinating to the ideas of the EU’s technocratic elites by securing the borders.

The European Union is continuing to build its future on the legacy and continuation of the “Western” Europe’s colonial past. The ‘welcoming story‘ of A. Merkel‘ was, at least from the point of the experiences of those who feel such laws the most on their skin, activists and critical theorists, a farse from the very beginning. Almost immediately after she said those words, Germany tightened it’s asylum laws and now under her and her’s most influental collegues, notably Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission, new Europewide laws are being proposed this weekend at the European Commission. They say that in the name of securty of both European citizens and people entering the EU the immigration flows have to be slowed down. This only means that they are proposing the enforcement of the external border regimes in the potential European Union member states.

On todays Brussels summit the chancelor and other technocrats were deciding that Balkan countries mustn’t allow people (‘refugees’ if you wish) pass their borders to the other country until the people in the continuing countries have been processed. In such cases the Balkan countries should stop their transport through the borders, but surelly the most controversial are the ideas to put 400 European – Frontex – border guards at the various Balkan route borders (source: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/oct/25/european-leaders-discuss-refugee-crisis-at-tense-brussels-summit) and strengthening the maritime operation Poseidon near the shores of Greece. If such countries are opposing such policies being pushed on them they are blamed for not showing any solidarity, which also produces the discourse of the ‘progressive’ Western and backward ‘Eastern-Central’ Europe. But when we analyse the tightening of the asylum laws in Germany and its attempt to keep the people on the external borders of the EU, we can notice a huge hypocrisy.

The policies of slowing the movement flows are already seen nowadays in Slovenian attempts to let only 2500 people through its borders with Croatia. By doing this it blocks all the former passing countries, making large refugee camps at their borders, where people freeze in the lowering temperatures and bad weather. Slovenia, who is trying to play a ‘good exaple’ of a Schengen guard, immediately saw that this is a mission impossible due to the large number of incoming people (more than 60.000 people passed just in two days) and their courageus actions (continuous protests at the borders) with which they, together with activists and volunteers, produce liberative border struggles.

Brezice, Slovenia
Breaking through the boundaries in Brezice, Slovenia. On the road to Graz

The earlier draft of the law proposed by chancelor and the EU commission also included the idea of redistribution of people throughout the different European countries – for now largly (15 of 28) opposed by the member states. This is an ‘upgrade‘ of the previously accepted Europeanwide quota system, which only included redistribution of people from Greece and Italy, but now includes mostly people staying in the Turkish refugee camps (source: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/oct/23/refugee-crisis-germany-push-compulsory-eu-quotas).

We mustn’t forget that the EU wants the Turkey to play one of the most important external border guards (read: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/oct/15/big-decisions-unlikely-migration-summit-eu-leaders), by bribing it’s political elites with money and other political sweets. With such a proposed draft law, the EU is not only trying to strenghten its external borders by the process of externalization, but also tries to divide people to ‘useful’ and ‘not-useful’, the first being interesting for the German (or other member countries) labor market (source: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/oct/23/refugee-crisis-germany-push-compulsory-eu-quotas). Here we see the very important role the neoliberal capitalist system is playing in the development of the immigration and asylum sytem, which not only blocks the immigration but also filters it. The future is only for the most so called ‘talented’, ‘lucky’ etc. ones, while the huge majority can suffer in the bad conditions of the refugee camps.

The EU elites are labeling its recent proposals as the ‘Europeanisation‘ of the EU’s external borders. Citing The Guardian (source: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/oct/23/refugee-crisis-germany-push-compulsory-eu-quotas):

‘This would entail national governments surrendering some of their powers on those frontiers and granting at least some authority over refugee admissions, detentions and deportation to EU bodies such as Frontex, the fledgling borders agency.’

As mentioned before, such statements just show that the EU is being built on the discourse of colonialism from its ‘Western’ European past, but now trying to encompass more European countries within the division between ‘Us’ (European citizens) and ‘Them’ (so called ‘third country citizens’ etc.).

The recent acts of the EU to control the migration on the so called ‘Balkan route’ is just a continuation what was already done within its developing immigration and asylum system, or better regime, in the past years. The self-organized struggles of people without ‘proper papers’ in Berlin and across Germany, already fight against the repressive roles played by the borders and migration system. Different media channels and other sources are now showing images of dying people on the borderlands, but this is nothing new. This happened too many times in the recent decades.

We must not accept any dividing discourses of the EU’s elites in the developing immigration and asylum policies and fall for any consenses in this direction, but we have to be clear about one thing, OPEN BORDERS FOR ALL!

Norway collaborates with the Sudanese Dictator Omar Al Bashir to enable him to kill and torture members of the oppositional groups:
About one month ago Oslo hosted delegates and members of Omar Al Bashir Militia and National Intelligence Security Services (NISS) – they covered them under the title authorities for Sudanese Interiors Affairs). Their mission was to facilitate the deportation process of political activists and victims of the war in Darfur. Norway imprisoned about 20 of those refugees from Sudan in Oslo, and they already deported six of them back to Sudan. Insiders confirmed that two of them were arrested immediately after their arrival in Sudan and that they are kept in NISS’ jails until now. Noone knows about their situation in prison. The other two had been arrested and tortured for 8 hours before they were released. The last two disappeared.

Sudanese government lead by Omar Albashir who is a criminal wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes, crimes against humanity and Genocide in the Darfur region in western Sudan. Nevertheless, the European Union is collaborating with the Dictator Omar Al Bashir and his security and secret service in order to restrict and destroy the Sudanese oppositional parties, youth groups and the self organized activists in Europe – through dirty hidden deals.
We reject this kind of crimes against Sudanese people, and we will use our rights to defend ourselves here in Europe, and for this we will use all legal and political tools available against the criminal and racist government in Norway and the whole European Union.
We call all supporters and freedom fighters in Germany to support our efforts and show solidarity in our fight against this unjust system.

“Stop War on Migrants”
DMC
CISPM/Berlin

Background and call for action:

Frontex is a private agency working for the European Commissions, funded with your tax money and waging in your name a war on migrants in the Mediterranean Sea and on the external borders of the EU. Frontex is having its 10th anniversary, but for us there is nothing to celebrate.

10 years of FRONTEX mean:

  • having turned the mediterranean sea into the deadliest border for migrants in the world: 22 thousand deaths in last 15 years
  • growing costs of enforcing border control; 30% increase in 2015 to 114 million euro;
  • continuation of the European colonial politics, through externalization of borders
  • daily violations of dignity in the detention centres in Poland and in the EU (600 000 detainees each year, including children),
  • fueling human trafficking profits (1 billion USD per year) by closing borders,

EU politicians have recently declared a new military operation against human trafficking, in an attempt to hide the complicity of their own migration policy in the profits of smugglers.

We say no to criminalizing people migrating to defend their dignity and their lives.

Let’s show solidarity! Freedom of movement and right of stay to all! Push back Frontex!
