Reflection and empowerment hour

If you are involved in any kind of refugee (self-) organization, supporter structures or charity organizations we would like to invite you to our empowerment workshop.

There is a lot to be done and the current situation of refugees in Germany and Europe requires us to rethink political strategies and use the power we have appropriately.
The current wave of welcoming culture is very important in order to show alternatives to the racist hatred that is getting stronger each day. At the same time this wave comes exactly at the time when our refugee movement has become very weak to almost not-existing anymore. The so-called civil society chooses to be in the helping position instead of supporting self organized refugee resistance. This is a step back, it puts us back to being the helped supposedly passive object while the helpers are becoming a new lobby.

How can we deal with these developments? How can we come out of the watching, the passive position, back into the acting, pro-active, demanding one? How to organize protest against the horrible law changes which is not (much) considered by helpers and white charity?

Our workshop will serve as a platform for us refugees and supporters but also as space to reach those we cannot reach through street protests. Such as Voters, Donors/ Funders, Neighbors, Academics, and so on politically, socially/ culturally and economically.
This will be done in rounds/cycles due to the number of issues which have to be discussed. For instance what are the roles of refugees and supporters, what are boundaries between refugees and supporters, what does solidarity mean? It means helping, providing humanitarian aid, charitable work or empowering, is it solidarity vs charity? And many others.

Therefore in our first round we will focus much on these questions by reflecting on our personalities in relation to the struggle, as the starting point of the decolonization process for humanity.

The empowerment workshop also builds up a framework to organise continuous readings which should take place every second week.

WE WILL RISE gives a space for reflection for the people of the refugee movement aswell as an exchange with people who are not (yet) part of the movement. It is a growing exhibition and
archive. It focusses especially on the time since the tent actions and the protest march from
Würzburg to Berlin, the protest camp on Oranienplatz and the squatting of the former school in Ohlauerstr. It has the aim to make history visible and accessible and to use it for the present and the future. The exhibition and archive is just a beginning. It can only grow if you take part in it and add what is important to you.
We want to struggle together with you for a permanent place for this work.

Fatou Diome: Migration to Europe as Freedom and Emancipation! Reading & Discussion https://www.oplatz.net/fatou-diome-migration-to-europe-as-freedom-and-emacipation-reading-discussion/ https://www.oplatz.net/fatou-diome-migration-to-europe-as-freedom-and-emacipation-reading-discussion/#comments Sat, 11 Jul 2015 00:26:56 +0000 https://www.oplatz.net/?p=7425 Event information  (french translation further below)

Date   15.07.2015, 18:00 – 21:00

Location  Oranienplatz, 10999 Berlin

„Migration is not only about poor, exploited people. It also includes people who leave to emacipate themselves, who leave in the name of liberty – and for a number of other reasons.“ Fatou Diome

The great Senegalese writer Fatou Diome will reflect upon flight and migration from her own, literary, and articulate perspective. She will read from her work and at the same time open a space for reflection and discussion. In light of current incidents and the catastrophic way the rising number of deaths in the mediterranean sea have been dealt with, she will discuss ways of understanding migration as freedom and emacipation, offer ideas of what this means for the discussion on the refugee question and how we can work together to make an emancipated and free mobility for all reality.

Fatou Diome is an author, activist and scientist. She was born on Niodior, a small island situated in front of the Senegalese coast, in 1968, and was initially raised by her grandmother. Before she started her studies in Dakar, she lived with three foster families in different cities. In 1990, she met a French working in Senegal and followed him to France four years later after their marriage, where she experienced various forms of everyday racism. After her divorce, she started to study literature, financing her studies through cleaning jobs.

After a collection of short stories and a novella, she published her first novel, „Le Ventre de l’Atlantique“, in 2003, a book which erned her internationally fame over night. It won the LiBeraturpreis, the Prix des Hémisphères Chantal Lapicque and the Jugendbuchpreis der Jury der jungen Leser. She has since published eight books, taught at the University of Strasbourg and the pedagogical college Karlsruhe, and presented the literary show “Nuit blanche” on France 3. In her works, she intensively deals with issues of migration, flight, and racism, as well as the relation between Senegal and France.

The reading will take place in French and German. The discussion will be translated into German (English translation possible).

The German passages will be read by the actrice Sara Hiruth Zewde.

The event takes place as part of the project “Why We Are Here!? African Perspectives on Flight and Migration“ conducted by AfricAvenir e.V. in 2015/2016. In cooperation with ARU and Oplatz media Group.

With the friendly support of the Landesstelle für Entwicklungszusammenarbeit (LEZ) and Engagement Global through means of the BMZ.

In case of rain the event will take place in the betahaus Berlin directly on Moritzplatz, Prinzessinnenstrasse 19-20, 10969 Berlin!
